N.B.  Middlesbrough became the first top flight club to play on an artificial surface when playing at Loftus Road in January 1982. In that F.A. Cup tie Middlesbrough were a Division 1 club and QPR competed in Division 2.
This game was the first FA Cup tie to be played on such a surface.

The only other ground to have a plastic pitch installed was Deepdale, home of Preston North End.
