Consecutive Meetings

Boro have had two spells each of 18 seasons in Division One, from 1902/03 to 1923/24 and the other from 1929/30 to 1953/54. These are the longest spells without a Divisional change.

The record for playing the same club in League games in consecutive seasons is against Liverpool for 26 seasons. We were First Division colleagues from 1929/30 until both teams were relegated in 1954. Encounters continued in the Second Division until Liverpool's promotion 8 years later in 1962.

Clubs who were in the First Division throughout Boro's first 18 season spell were Aston Villa, Blackburn, Everton, Newcastle, Sheffield United, and Sunderland. During the second 18 season spell Arsenal, Liverpool (as mentioned), Portsmouth, and Sunderland again provided annual opposition.
