FOOTBALL.--On Saturday the Middlesbrough Football Club journeyed to Newcastle to
play the Tyne Association on the Northumberland cricket ground, and a very pleasant
and closely-contested game resulted in a tie, each side scoring two goals. The first
part of the play was in favour of the home team, the Middlesbrough men not playing
with their usual dash; but on the Tyne men securing a goal by a well-directed rush,
the visitors were put on their mettle, and quickly equalised matters by obtaining
a goal. After this the play became very fast, several of the Tyne club (notably Cumberlege
and Bruce) “dribbling” splendidly, but at the call of half-time no further advantage
had been gained by either side. The visitors now kicked off, and, playing better
together, pressed the home team, several shots only just missing the goal, and one
of them hitting the tape line would undoubtedly have gone under had the tape been
tight. The ball was now taken along the side of the ground by the Tyne forwards,
and being well middled another goal was scored for them. As time was nearly up Middlesbrough
worked hard to recover their lost ground, and with some very effective play they
succeeded in placing another goal to their credit just before time was called. After
the match the visitors were entertained by the home team at the King’s Head. The
players were-- Middlesbrough
W. Greenwood (Captain), H. Booth, W.
G. Hildreth, H.H. Hildreth, Dales, Ingledew,
forwards; B. Booth, Gibson, half backs;
Windross, backs; Catton, goal keeper.
Tyne-- Bruce, Clarke, Harris, Blackborne,
iddlestone, T.D. Challoner, forwards;
Cumberledge, Weeks, half-backs; S.N. Chal-
(captain), back; Homfray, goal keeper.
