FOOTBALL.
MIDDLESBROUGH ASSOCIATION V.
TYNE ASSOCIATION.
-----------
A football match was played on Saturday at Middlesbrough between the above clubs.
The match was played in four twenties, and the Tyne kicked off. For some time the
ball was kept at the Middlesbrough end, but ultimately the Middlesbrough team got
it away, and H. Booth secured a goal for his side. In the next twenty Middlesbrough
again had the best of it. Some good dribbles were made by Ewbank and Booth and the
ball was taken up the hill with a rush, when there was a turn of the tide, Blackthorpe
kicking a goal for the Tynesiders. This was followed up by another goal kicked by
Challoner. The Middlesbrough men, however, did their best to secure a victory, and
Ewbank made a goal, as also did Ingledew. The Tyne men made desperate efforts to
get another goal, but they did not succeed, so the home team won, having obtained
three goals to two by its opponents. The teams were :- Middlesbrough : F. Shepherd
and W. Greenwood, backs; W. Pigstock and C. Booth, half backs; W.G. Hildreth and
F. Ingledew, right wing; H.H. Hildreth and T. Dales, left wing; J. Ewbank (captain)
and H. Booth, centres; P. Gibson, goal. Tyne : R.L. Weeks and H.F. Bulman, backs;
E.A. Simpson (captain) and R. Hirst, half backs; J.C. Evans and T.D. Challoner, right
wing; W.H. Bittleston and W. Blackthorne left wing; J. Bruce and J.A Harrison, centres;
and S.G. Homfray, goal.

FOOTBALL.-- On Saturday a football match was played between the Middlesbrough
Association Club and the Redcar on the ground of the former at Beckton Hill. The
team won by one goal to nothing. Dales, C.Booth, Ewbank, and Ingledew played well
for Middlesbrough; and Pounder , Yeo, and shepherd displayed great activity for Redcar.
Unfortunately, Shepherd, while charging one of the Middlesbrough team, fell and dislocated
his shoulder. He is, however, progressing favourably. The only goal was kicked by
Greenwood. There was some fine dribbling by the visitors. The teams were :- Middlesbrough
-- Forwards, Ewbank (captain), H. Booth, J. Reed, T. Ingledew, W.G. Hildreth, and

FOOTBALL.-- A match between the Middlesbrough Association and the Redcar Football
Clubs was played at Redcar on Saturday. The ball was kicked off by Middlesbrough,
and quickly returned to the centre of the ground by their opponents. After some desultory
play W.G.Hildreth ran the ball in dangerous proximity to the Redcar goal, but a good
kick by Shepherd sent him to the right about. Very soon the Redcar goal was again
in danger, the result being a corner kick (a bad shot) by Hildreth, but a good run
by Baker, however, relieved the goal. In the second and third “twenties” it was clearly
demonstrated that the Redcar team was considerably overmatched, the play being a
series of shots at goal and corner kicks, only at odd times relieved by the coolness
and fast running of Yeo and Barker. All the exertions of the Middlesbrough team proved
unavailing, owing to the stubborn defence of the Redcar backs and goal keeper, until,
at the end of the third twenty, a claim of “hands” was allowed. Then Ewbank quickly
passed the ball to Dale, who secured the first goal. In the last “twenty” another
goal was shot for Middlesbrough by W.G.Hildreth, thus winning by two goals to nothing.
Ewbank, C.Booth, and Pigstock played well for Middlesbrough, as did Yeo, Baker, and
Shepherd for Redcar.
